Database management interests me
for different reasons, but mainly because my current role at work is in data
management. Today, information is everything and businesses must keep track of
customer information, hospitals must store patient records safely, and even
social media apps must manage countless posts, messages, and interactions. My
specific task is to record and keep track of items that are delivered
electronically for specific contracts at work. Ensuring that what is delivered
is exactly what is needed, nothing more and nothing less. Keeping this data
organized is very important. I want to learn how databases work behind the
scenes to keep all this information organized and secure. “A database
management system is responsible for ensuring that the data is stored
efficiently and that users can access it in a secure and timely manner” (Elmasri
and Navathe, 2016). Understanding database management also feels important
because it is more than just storage of data, it is about ensuring that data
can be accessed efficiently and kept safe from threats. Working for a defense
contract, keeping it safe hits close.
